Paul and Ellie’s Big Island beach wedding is a gorgeous day of love, laughter, and a touch of Hawaiian magic!
Their love story began in the digital realm, where online dating brought them together over eight years ago. From that moment on, they became inseparable, sharing their lives and adventures for nearly a decade. After a move to Nebraska for a fresh start, Ellie took the reins and nudged Paul towards the next step – purchasing the engagement ring that would symbolize their commitment! Sometimes a nudge is all ones need! They were excited to begin their next chapter together having never been to Hawaii island. And what better place to tie the knot than on the breathtaking beaches of the Big Island?

Their Big Island beach wedding day was nothing short of enchanting! With the gentle ocean breeze caressing their faces, Paul and Ellie exchanged vows surrounded by the love and support of their closest friends and family. Hawaiian touches and sacred traditions added a unique and memorable flair to their ceremony, infusing the day with the spirit of aloha. We love how they embraced the island spirit in their vows!
As they stood hand in hand on the sands of Old Kona Airport, the beauty of their love shone brightly against the backdrop of the sea. Their ceremony was intimate and focused on their promise to love and cherish each other forever. It doesn’t get any more romantic than that does it?

But the true marvel came as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of gold and pink. Wrapped in each other’s arms, Paul and Ellie basked in the warm glow of the sunset, their hearts full of love and the promise of a future filled with endless adventures! The lava rocks added a signature island touch to the scene. Ellie’s veil fluttered in the breeze making it feel even more ethereal…

Congratulations to the newlyweds, may your love continue to shine as bright as the Hawaiian sun! We were honored to bring your beautiful day to life! All of us at Simple Hawaii Wedding send you love and aloha for your future ahead!

Our packages include award-winning photography by the Karma Hill Photography team, detailed and thorough planning services, and meticulous day-of coordination, ensuring flawless execution of your wedding ceremony.
Read on to discover what makes Simple Hawaii Wedding the perfect choice for couples desiring an unforgettable Big Island wedding experience.

From start to finish Simple Hawaii Wedding and their staff had amazing communication and made sure everything fell into place! My husband and I love our officiant, Auntie Tutu, and how she spent time getting to know us as a couple and made sure our ceremony was perfect. My flowers were beautiful, and our photographer and location were perfect! Mahalo! – Steve & Tina Bonanno
Unlike many other Big Island wedding planning companies, we have a dedicated team of planners whose sole focus is organizing your wedding and coordinating all vendors.
For background on who we are, our team started on the island of Maui in 2007 with the brand Simple Maui Wedding. With much success on Maui, we expanded to Oahu with our Simple Oahu Wedding brand. Both brands provide superior quality and service and have a combined 135 5-star reviews.
Some wedding companies try to handle numerous roles, such as officiant, planner, photographer, and florist. We, however, have dedicated team members specializing solely in wedding coordination. We believe that making this task one function delivers the highest-quality experience and service to you.

Thanks to our extensive wedding planning team, we have backups for every aspect of your wedding planning needs. In the rare event of an illness or emergency affecting an officiant or photographer, we have a roster of exceptional professionals ready to step in at a moment’s notice.
With over 20 years of experience coordinating events in Hawaii, our dedicated team offers unparalleled expertise and attention to detail.
Below are just a few of the tasks our coordinators handle for you:
Our team offers professional assistance in selecting and securing wedding venues on the Big Island, including beach location recommendations tailored to your preferences and expectations.

Our coordination team will craft a timeline that ensures you arrive at the location optimally for the best lighting and weather conditions. This is particularly crucial for sunset weddings, as timing must be precise to capture stunning beach photos before darkness sets in. After sunset in Hawaii, it is usually completely dark about 30 minutes after sunset, so timing is crucial.
Navigating the legal requirements for obtaining a marriage license can be daunting. Let us simplify the process for you by providing step-by-step guidance and ensuring all necessary paperwork is completed correctly and on time.
You can relax knowing that your wedding venue is fully compliant with all local regulations and adequately insured. For beach weddings, we’ll take care of obtaining permits and having the proper insurance coverage to ensure your celebration proceeds without a hitch and fully complies with state regulations.
Our experienced Hawaii wedding planning team excels in coordinating vendors to ensure the flawless execution of your wedding vision. From photographers to florists, we’ll coordinate with each vendor, manage timelines, confirm them before your big day, and oversee setup to guarantee a seamless and stress-free experience.
Access our curated list of preferred vendors, including top-notch hair and makeup artists. We’ve carefully vetted each professional to ensure they meet our high standards of quality and reliability, allowing you to choose the perfect team for your special day confidently.
Our Big Island wedding photographer, Karma Hill Photography, is an award-winning professional photography team. Karma Hill Photography has been on The Knot’s Best of Weddings list every year from 2017- 2024 and is part of the Knot Best of Weddings Hall of Fame. With 160 reviews and a 5-star rating on Google, customers attest to their amazing photographic quality and exceptional customer service.
Owner and founder Karma Hill has personally trained our wedding photography team on the Big Island on the challenging Hawaii lighting and the intricacies of wedding photography. Capturing the perfect moments, posing, and engaging couples and guests for the most authentic and beautiful images. Their airy, dreamy, cinematic style will have you looking back on your wedding photos with love and awe. Each team member embarks on extensive training on morning and sunset light, so whichever time of day you choose, your photos will be delivered in the signature style they are so well known for.
In addition to their outstanding photographic quality straight out of the camera, Karma Hill Photography employs a team of professional editors trained in the most advanced editing technology. Unlike a one-person operation editing photos while sipping wine and watching Netflix late into the night, their professional full-time office staff ensures meticulous editing to enhance every detail. Our editing team goes above and beyond by removing distractions like beachgoers or signage so all you remember is your perfect day and love for one another.
Karma Hill Photography will craft a Sneak Peek of your wedding photos within one week of your ceremony. Having a ‘Sneak Peek’ of your wedding photos allows you to easily share highlights with family and friends or post them on social media. Typically featuring around 20 photos in a timeline-style presentation, this preview offers a delightful glimpse into your special day before the full editing process, which typically takes about a month, is completed.
With each of our wedding packages (excluding the Just the Two of Us Package), we provide an on-site coordinator to ensure your ceremony runs smoothly. Having an on-site coordinator is paramount to managing the flow of guests and vendors and ensuring the wedding couple knows where and when to go, stand, and make your ceremony smooth with zero stress to you!

The wedding coordinator arrives at the location before our couples and their guests to ensure everything is as it should be and can promptly address any issues or changes, such as ceremony setup, beach conditions, or weather. Additionally, they manage the flow of people, including vendors such as photographers, musicians, and florists, directing them to their designated areas.
The day-of wedding coordinator also serves as the project manager for the day. If unforeseen circumstances, such as road closures, could hinder vendors or supplies from reaching your wedding, they can swiftly communicate with vendors and our office-based team to adjust plans and ensure the wedding proceeds smoothly.
Onsite coordinators also provide extra eyes to ensure everything looks perfect. They can assist in ensuring the couple looks their best, safeguard belongings during the ceremony on a public beach, and handle tasks like holding the bouquet or leis and assisting with a wedding dress or veil during couples photos.
Having an on-site coordinator is invaluable in alleviating stress by managing tasks. They allow you to fully enjoy your day without worrying about the multitude of details that need attention during the ceremony.

Our lovely couple, Jennifer and Jake’s Big Island beach wedding, was a day filled with love and joy! Their journey, beginning as colleagues and evolving into a beautiful love story, culminated in a breathtaking ceremony that perfectly captured the essence of their relationship.
Their engagement, marked by a heartfelt surprise from Jake, set the tone for the sweetness and sincerity that marked their union. As Jake presented an intricately designed ring, professing his love and commitment, the stage was set for a future filled with joy and togetherness. With an 11-year-old son, Kai, adding an extra touch of warmth and liveliness to their lives, Jennifer and Jake savored every moment spent together, whether it was exploring the Oregon coast, indulging in a round of golf, or simply reveling in the simple joys of life. So, we were beyond thrilled to coordinate this beautiful couple’s beach wedding!

The picturesque setting of Kukio Beach proved to be the perfect backdrop for their special day. The soft, golden light filtering through the swaying palm trees created an ethereal ambiance. Did you know that the Big Island of Hawaii is actually bigger than the entire state of Rhode Island? It’s true! With such a vast expanse of land to explore, it’s important to plan where to stay on the Big Island carefully so you don’t end up spending the majority of your time in the car 🚙.
In this article, we’ll cover…..
Before you book your Big Island adventure, read through this vital information and plan accordingly. This will ensure you make the most of your vacation without spending excessive time behind the wheel.

When it comes to the Big Island of Hawaii, the island’s size makes choosing the right location to stay a crucial aspect of maximizing your trip and making the most of your precious vacation time. Before you even set foot on the island, it’s important to have a clear idea of the attractions you want to see. Some of the most sought-after attractions are a 6-hour round-trip drive from the most popular resorts on the Big Island.
The east side of the Big Island offers a captivating adventure with its lush jungle feel, volcanoes, and stunning black sand beaches. It’s an ideal destination for those seeking thrilling experiences like hiking through lush rainforests, exploring volcanic craters 🌋, and witnessing the raw power of nature. On the other hand, the west side of the island provides luxurious accommodations not available on the east side, with sun-drenched beaches and a plethora of ocean adventures.
To truly experience both worlds of the island, careful planning is essential. You can absolutely strike the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation on the Big Island! We suggest creating a well-thought-out itinerary with your highlights, must-dos, and things to see before you even book your hotel. Trying to casually drive between destinations can result in wasting hours in the car, limiting the time you have to enjoy the experiences you came for!
Staying on the leeward or west side of the Big Island during a vacation is a choice that promises an unparalleled Hawaii vacation experience. The leeward side is often considered the best place to stay for that idyllic beach Hawaiian vacation for several compelling reasons. Firstly, this region enjoys abundant sunshine and relatively low rainfall, ensuring consistently pleasant weather ideal for beach outings, water sports, and outdoor activities. The golden sands and crystal-clear waters of beaches like those on the Kohala Coast offer perfect conditions for sunbathing and snorkeling 🤿. Moreover, the leeward side is home to some of the island’s most luxurious resorts, accommodations, and dining, ensuring a comfortable and pampered stay for visitors.
Additionally, staying on the West side of Hawaii Island offers easy access to a myriad of attractions. From exploring historic sites like the Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, to marveling at the wonders of Mauna Kea’s summit, travelers have a plethora of options within reach. The leeward side is also a gateway to mesmerizing marine life, with opportunities for whale watching and swimming with manta rays in the warm Pacific waters. Furthermore, the region boasts a vibrant culinary scene, offering fresh, locally sourced seafood and traditional Hawaiian delicacies, providing a delightful culinary journey for visitors.

This side of the Big Island, from Kohala to Puako, offers a diverse and enchanting tapestry of towns, making it an ideal destination for travelers seeking a rich Hawaiian experience. Beginning in Kohala, the region known as the “Birthplace of Kings,” towns like Hawi and Kapaau exude a charming, laid-back atmosphere with their historic buildings, art galleries, and farmers markets. These towns are surrounded by the majestic beauty of Kohala’s rolling hills and lush landscapes, providing a serene escape.
Moving southward, Waimea, often called Kamuela, has a charming downtown nestled amidst verdant pastures and Parker Ranch, one of the oldest and largest cattle ranches 🐄 in the USA. Here, visitors can enjoy farm-to-table dining experiences, explore Hawaiian cowboy culture, and relish the cool mountain air. Despite its verdant beauty, there are few resorts and accommodations upcountry.
Further down the coast, Waikoloa Village welcomes guests with its luxury resorts, world-class golf ⛳️ courses, five-star dining, and inviting sandy beaches. This area is known for its sunny weather, making it an excellent spot for sunbathing, snorkeling, and water sports.
Continuing the journey, Kailua-Kona stands out as the lively heart of the west side. This historic town boasts vibrant waterfront restaurants, art galleries, and historic sites like Hulihee Palace. It’s a gateway to diverse adventures, from exploring lava tube caves to snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters of Kealakekua Bay with abundant marine life. One thing to note about the Kona area is that there are limited sand beaches. So, if you are looking for more options for white sandy beaches, the Waikoloa area may be a better choice for your stay.
Stroll along Ali’i Drive, the main street in Kona, brimming with shops, restaurants, and lively hangouts like Kona Brewing Co. For adventure seekers, Kona offers some of the best surfing and snorkeling spots on the island at Kahaluu and Banyans. Don’t forget to explore the unique lava fields surrounding the area, a testament to the region’s volcanic history.
Just south of Waikoloa lies the quaint coastal community of Puako. This small town offers a more tranquil and authentic Hawaiian experience. Puako is renowned for its pristine, lava-rock-strewn shoreline, where crystal-clear waters provide excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities. The town’s charm lies in its laid-back atmosphere and the easy access it provides to explore vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life. Puako is also a great spot for whale 🐋 watching during the winter months when humpback whales frequent the warm Hawaiian waters.
Staying on the west side of the island offers not only a central location for exploring various natural wonders, such as the mesmerizing Pololu Valley and the majestic Mauna Kea, but also a cultural immersion into Hawaii’s rich heritage. It’s an ideal base for excursions to ancient Hawaiian temples, or heiaus, and to the Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, showcasing the island’s intriguing past.
The west side’s sunny climate, a wealth of outdoor activities, and a plethora of dining and cultural experiences make it a perfect choice for travelers seeking a well-rounded Hawaiian vacation. Whether you’re captivated by the history of Kohala or enchanted by the lively ambiance of Kailua-Kona, the west side of the Big Island promises an unforgettable stay.

While Hilo is the largest city on the east side of the Big Island, it might not be the ideal vacation spot for every traveler. Despite its size, Hilo lacks the bustling resort atmosphere found on the west coast. The city experiences higher rainfall due to its windward location, which might deter those seeking constant sunshine and outdoor activities. The East side receives approximately 142 inches of rainfall annually, while the Kohala Coast, located on the leeward (dry) side, gets only about 10 inches of rain per year! The eastern side’s lush rainforests and waterfalls are undoubtedly breathtaking, but the abundance of rain can limit beach days and outdoor adventures. Additionally, the lack of high-end resorts and commercialized entertainment options might not appeal to travelers looking for luxury amenities and vibrant nightlife.

Hilo’s charm lies in its historic downtown and cultural attractions, making it an excellent destination for those interested in Hawaiian history and local traditions. However, travelers looking for a more resort-style vacation, with easy access to gorgeous beaches, golf courses, and upscale dining, might find the west coast a better fit.
Many travelers who opt to stay close to Hilo for its affordable accommodations soon realize that the sunny beaches they dreamed of are not within convenient driving distance. In fact, these beautiful beaches are located on the Kailua-Kona side, which is nearly a 2 1/2-hour drive away! So it’s all the more reason to plan accordingly based on what you want to do!
Situated in Hilo, this affordable option offers cozy and private cottages with a tropical flair. It has received high ratings for its value for money and elevated experience. The cottage is surrounded by beautiful gardens and offers stunning mountain and city views. Guests appreciate the exclusive gated access that ensures privacy and security. With access to a private beach, couples can enjoy serene moments and breathtaking sunsets. Onsite staff provide delightful amenities, including spa services for the ultimate luxury experience. The cottage also offers an outdoor kitchen with BBQ facilities that allow couples to create their own dream wedding or intimate reception of up to 35 guests. There is also an indoor dining area that is perfect for small gatherings.
This hotel is a great choice for travelers seeking affordable accommodations in Hilo. It offers clean rooms and friendly staff, ensuring a comfortable stay. Guests appreciate its convenient location and reasonable prices, making it a popular budget option. The hotel features an outdoor pool, a fitness center, and laundry facilities for guests’ convenience. Guests can also enjoy a complimentary breakfast served daily in the lobby. The on-site restaurant specializes in Hawaiian cuisine with local flavors. With its relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff, this hotel provides everything you need for a memorable stay.
Located on the stunning coastline of Hilo Bay, the Grand Naniloa Hotel Hilo – a DoubleTree by Hilton is a perfect destination for travelers seeking a memorable stay on the Big Island. This oceanfront hotel offers panoramic tropical views and is conveniently located just 10 minutes from Hilo International Airport. For those looking to explore the wonders of Hilo and the surrounding area, the hotel’s location is ideal. Situated near Hilo Bay, guests can easily access attractions such as the beautiful Wailuku River State Park and the iconic Rainbow Falls. Additionally, the hotel is just a short drive away from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, allowing guests to witness the awe-inspiring power of nature.
The property boasts a range of amenities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Guests can indulge in a round of golf on the hotel’s 9-hole golf course or simply relax and soak in the beauty of the surroundings. The hotel also offers free on-site parking, making it convenient for guests with their own transportation.
Both VRBO and Airbnb offer budget-friendly options for staying in Hilo, making it easier for travelers to find affordable accommodations without compromising on comfort. These platforms provide a wide range of vacation rentals, including houses, condos, and apartments, allowing visitors to choose the option that best suits their needs and budget. Additionally, many of the rentals come with amenities such as pool and hot tub access, air conditioning, and full kitchen facilities.

Splitting your time between the east and west sides can offer you the best of both worlds. It’s wise to decide on the activities you want to experience ahead of time, regardless of which side of the island they are located on. This way, you can plan your accommodations and rental car accordingly, ensuring you make the most of your time. If you’re keen on exploring the volcanoes, witnessing lava flows, and immersing yourself in the lush rainforests of the east side, we recommend allocating a significant portion of your stay in that area.
On the other hand, if you’re craving sunshine, beautiful beaches, and the laid-back vibes of the west side, you may want to spend a considerable amount of time there as well. So, what’s the solution? Rent a car and plan out your itinerary based on your activities!
Renting a car is essential for exploring the Big Island and getting around conveniently! Numerous car rental companies operate on the island, providing reliable vehicles for your adventure. One suggestion is to consider renting a car in Hilo and dropping it off in Kona, or vice versa, depending on your itinerary. This can save you time and make your journey more seamless. And most importantly, your vacation time isn’t wasted in the car! We can’t stress how important it is to plan your trip ahead of time, including booking any activities, hotels, and transportation as soon as you have your itinerary planned out.
Here is a list of reputable car rental companies on the Big Island:
By splitting your vacation time between the east and west sides of the Big Island, you can truly immerse yourself in the diverse landscapes and experiences this tropical paradise has to offer!

Our new Big Island Wedding venue, the Fairmont Orchid Resort, is a true oceanfront oasis that will take your breath away! We’ve worked with a few of our talented partners to showcase its natural beauty and convenience for your special day. Toes in the sand, hair in the breeze, a sweeping ocean view – this venue has it all!
Located in the Waikoloa resort area, just north of Kona, it’s known for its world-class accommodations, excellent shopping, dining, and golf. The resort offers two beautiful locations for your ceremony: a gorgeous beach ceremony site and an oceanfront grassy lawn. While both options are stunning, we recommend the beach location for its toes-in-the-sand feel and unbeatable views. Plus, the oceanfront resort is the perfect spot for you and your guests to gather before and after the ceremony! Your guests can sit comfortably and take in the beauty of the scene…

Our incredible partner Grace Flowers Hawaii went above and beyond with the decor and florals for our styled shoot! The wispy greenery and white blooms circling the sandy altar create a fresh and beachy feel that was so unique! Whether you want a traditional or more contemporary look, our knowledge team will happily work with you both to bring your vision to life! We love to highlight seasonal and tropical blooms. But most of all, we’re always excited to try new ideas to make your wedding unforgettable…
It’s worth noting that the beach ceremony location is next to a public beach and walking path, so while it’s not a high-traffic area, there may be people nearby. Additionally, the beach can get a little windy, but we think it only adds to the romantic atmosphere! Our lovely couple, Shelly and Max, beautifully modeled some stunning floral creations by our creative floral partner, Grace Flowers Hawaii.

The Fairmont Orchid also offers an oceanfront reception area right on the beach that is simply breathtaking! Imagine exchanging vows with your toes in the sand and celebrating with friends and family amidst stunning ocean views. The oceanfront reception area is located just steps away from the beach ceremony location, making it a seamless transition for you and your guests. Plus, you can dance the night away nearby under the swaying palm trees!
The reception area is spacious enough to accommodate small weddings, offering endless possibilities for decor and layout. Whether you want a beachy bohemian ambiance or more traditional, we can work with you to create the perfect setting. And the beauty of this location speaks for itself, so minimal decor can go a long way!

One of the most impressive features of this reception location is the breathtaking view of the ocean that guests can enjoy while seated at their tables. There’s nothing more romantic than a reception with an ocean view!
Our talented creative team took advantage of the tropical setting and incorporated vibrant, tropical colors into the decor, adding to the seaside marine feel of our styled shoot. The pink plumeria table runner was especially stunning against the natural blues and greens of the ocean view. As you can see, there are endless possibilities at this location, whatever your style and vision! One thing is for sure, it’s the perfect setting for a picture-perfect wedding reception that you and your guests will never forget…

Loving what you see? We currently offer package pricing for weddings from Monday to Thursday and within 90 days. However, we also accommodate bookings for further out dates and weekends with an additional site fee and a food and beverage minimum with the resort. This allows our clients to have more flexibility when planning their special day…after all, we’re all for stress-free planning!
In addition to the Hawaii wedding packages pricing, it’s important to note that a three-night stay is required for the wedding couple, but the price is not included in the package. This is an opportunity for the couple to enjoy the luxurious amenities and stunning views that the Fairmont Orchid has to offer and to fully immerse themselves in the Hawaiian experience!

After your ceremony, you can take advantage of all the natural splendor around the property! One of the most stunning features of this location is the waterfall. Set amidst lush greenery, the waterfall provides a natural and romantic backdrop for stunning photos. The soft, flowing water cascading down adds a serene and tranquil feeling to these portraits from our styled shoot!
Another highlight is the lava rock beach just below the reception area. The rough, jagged rocks create a striking contrast with the crystal clear waters, making it a unique and unforgettable setting for your newlywed portraits. And we can’t forget to mention that it’s the perfect spot for capturing some romantic sunset portraits too!

We would like to extend a heartfelt mahalo to our wonderful partners who made the styled shoot at the Fairmont Orchid possible. Your creativity, expertise, and attention to detail helped us bring our vision to life. We couldn’t have done it without you! The stunning ocean view, coupled with the luxurious accommodations and reception options, makes the Fairmont Orchid the perfect location for your dream wedding!
